Compel politicians to prevent government shutdowns

The Issue

As someone who deeply appreciates the dedication and resilience of our federal employees, it pains me to see them face undue stress and financial hardship during government shutdowns. These hardworking individuals continue to keep our country running smoothly without pay, sacrificing their own well-being and that of their families. It's time we demand accountability from our elected officials who are responsible for these situations.

Government shutdowns not only disrupt lives but also damage our nation's economy, leading to an annual GDP loss of approximately $3 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Essential services halt, federal employees face furloughs, and millions struggle to make ends meet while politicians continue to receive their salaries without consequence. It's time for our leaders to have true 'skin in the game'.

To address this, I propose a bold yet necessary solution: if a government shutdown extends beyond seven days, lawmakers should forfeit a week's salary and face a 1% salary reduction for each additional day of the shutdown. Crucially, they should not be entitled to back pay once the government reopens. This measure would ensure that politicians understand the severity of their actions and are incentivized to act swiftly in the country's best interest.

This policy change would compel politicians to prioritize the needs and well-being of the country over partisan gridlocks, ensuring that government shutdowns are rare and swiftly resolved. The time for change is now, and it starts with holding our leaders accountable for their actions.

Join me in demanding that our lawmakers put the needs of our citizens first and prevent unnecessary shutdowns. Please sign this petition to urge Congress to enact legislation that ties their salaries to their job performance during government shutdowns. Together, we can make a difference and protect the livelihoods of hardworking Americans and their families. Let's ensure our government works for the people, by the people.
