As passionate advocates for railway history and preservation, we care deeply about the operational restoration of locomotive 202 in Hagerstown, MD. This is not merely a machine to us. It is a tangible symbol of our Western Maryland heritage, a testament to the hardworking railroad workers of the past, and deserves to take its rightful place on the main line of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR), not idly sitting in an exhibit.

The locomotive 202 is a critical part of our local history, serving as an original Western Maryland steam locomotive. It has the potential to bring the past alive in a way books and stationary exhibits cannot. Seeing and hearing this historical icon in operation evokes a living history that expands understanding and appreciation for railroading yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

We understand the value and importance of historic preservation and the power of learning from artifacts in motion. According to the American Alliance of Museums, tangible interaction with historical artifacts significantly boosts the educational and memorable value, contributing to productive and long-lasting learning experiences.

We ask the Hagerstown city authorities to release Locomotive 202 to the WMSR for a comprehensive inspection, overhaul, and full restoration. Every day this locomotive stands still, we lose an opportunity to spark fresh interest, extend our railway heritage's reach, and preserve our treasured history.
