Re: URGENT REQUEST FOR COMPASSIONATE RELEASE AND MEDICAL REVIEW
Jason Jones #70541
High Desert State Prison – Unit 2B, Cell 23A

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Jenna Hixon with Parole Pathways, and I am writing on behalf of my client, Jason Jones #70541, who is currently incarcerated at High Desert State Prison in Unit 2B, Cell 23A.

This letter constitutes a formal and urgent request that Mr. Jones be evaluated for compassionate release based upon his serious and progressively worsening medical conditions and his continued difficulty obtaining timely medical treatment while incarcerated.

Mr. Jones is currently suffering from multiple significant medical concerns, including diabetes, serious problems involving his right eye, deterioration of his left eye, chronic back pain, hip pain, and significant problems involving his spine from approximately the L5 region downward.

Of particular concern is Mr. Jones’s vision. His right eye has already experienced significant problems, and he reports that his left eye is now beginning to deteriorate as well. He believes his left eye has been overcompensating for the impairment in his right eye. Given his diabetes and existing visual problems, we are extremely concerned about any further delay in appropriate evaluation and treatment.

Mr. Jones is also suffering from substantial back and hip pain and has been informed that he will require back surgery. According to Mr. Jones, it took approximately four years and eleven months for NDOC to finally provide him with an MRI. That MRI was eventually completed while he was housed at Lovelock Correctional Center.

Despite finally receiving the MRI, Mr. Jones reports that no surgery has been performed and no surgery has been scheduled.

He was also informed that another medical procedure would be scheduled. To date, however, he reports that this procedure has not been scheduled either.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jones continues to experience pain and reports that his physical condition is progressively deteriorating.

This is not the first attempt to obtain medical assistance for Mr. Jones. We have sent repeated communications concerning his medical care, while Mr. Jones has submitted medical kites and grievances in an effort to receive appropriate treatment. We have received responses indicating that certain matters have been addressed or resolved; however, according to Mr. Jones, the underlying medical problems remain unresolved and the necessary treatment and procedures have still not occurred.

At this point, continuing to respond that these matters have been “handled” does not address our concerns when the patient continues to experience serious symptoms and necessary treatment remains outstanding.

We are therefore requesting an immediate review of Mr. Jones’s medical records and eligibility for compassionate release so that he may obtain appropriate treatment from outside medical providers before his condition deteriorates further or results in permanent harm.

Mr. Jones is not requesting special treatment. He is requesting the opportunity to receive the medical treatment necessary to protect his health and prevent further deterioration.

His circumstances are particularly concerning because he is already approaching parole eligibility. Mr. Jones reports that he is parole eligible for a December 2026 release. He was initially advised that he would appear before the Parole Board this month for consideration of a December release, but he has since been informed that he will not appear until October for his mandatory parole consideration.

Mr. Jones is not creating institutional problems. His primary institutional activity related to these issues has been filing grievances and medical kites in an effort to obtain necessary medical care. The exercise of established grievance and medical-request procedures should not interfere with his ability to obtain treatment or receive fair consideration for release.

Given his proximity to possible release and his progressively worsening medical condition, we respectfully request that NDOC determine whether continued incarceration serves any legitimate purpose that outweighs the significant medical concerns involved.

We are specifically requesting the following:

1. An immediate review of Jason Jones’s complete medical file and current medical condition.
2. An evaluation of his eligibility for compassionate release or any other available medical or early-release mechanism.
3. An expedited evaluation of the deterioration of both eyes, particularly in light of his diabetes.
4. Immediate review of his chronic back and hip conditions and the results of the MRI completed at Lovelock Correctional Center.
5. Written clarification regarding whether back surgery has been medically recommended and, if so, why it has not been scheduled.
6. Written clarification regarding the additional procedure Mr. Jones was advised would be scheduled and its current status.
7. Appropriate outside specialist referrals where NDOC cannot timely provide the necessary level of treatment.
8. Confirmation of his current parole-hearing status and anticipated December 2026 parole eligibility/release consideration.
9. Preservation and review of his medical kites, grievances, medical records, referrals, specialist recommendations, scheduling records, and previous communications regarding these medical concerns.
10. A written response explaining what immediate steps will be taken to address his medical needs and his request for compassionate release.

This matter has also been reported to the appropriate Nevada health oversight authority and the ACLU, and it is being submitted to the Nevada Attorney General’s Office and the Inspector General’s Office for documentation and review.

Our objective is simple: to prevent Mr. Jones’s health from deteriorating further while waiting for medical treatment that has already been delayed for an extraordinary amount of time.

We respectfully request prompt intervention and a meaningful review of his compassionate-release request. If compassionate release is not approved, we request a written explanation of the decision and the immediate medical treatment plan that will be implemented to address his unresolved conditions.

If you have questions or require additional information, you may speak directly with Jason Jones #70541 at High Desert State Prison or contact me directly at 725-245-9234.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious matter. We respectfully request acknowledgment of this correspondence and a prompt written response.

Sincerely,

Jenna Hixon
