The Issue

On September 30, Tennessee tried to put Christa Pike to death by lethal injection, and the attempt failed. Her attorneys say staff spent about an hour trying to set two IV lines. One attorney counted at least seven needles used on her left arm alone. After two doses of pentobarbital, she was still breathing. Witnesses were sent out of the room while she was alive. She is now in critical condition at a hospital the state has not named.

Pike was convicted of the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, a loss that Slemmer's family still carries every day. That grief is real and deserves respect. The question now is whether any government can carry out death sentences without causing the kind of prolonged suffering that the ban on cruel and unusual punishment exists to prevent. "My arm feels like it's about to burst open," Pike said during the attempt, according to WKRN journalist Tori Gessner, who witnessed it.

Governor Bill Lee called the night "a tragedy" and paused executions through the end of 2026. A pause only delays the same risk. Doubts also hang over other cases: advocates say no direct evidence connects Gary Wayne Sutton, who was set to be executed December 3, to the 1992 murders he was convicted of.

Governor Lee has the power to commute Christa Pike's sentence now. The Tennessee General Assembly has the power to end the death penalty for good and replace it with life in prison, a sentence that keeps the public safe without risking another night like September 30.

Sign the petition to tell Governor Lee and Tennessee lawmakers to commute Pike's sentence and end the death penalty before another execution goes wrong.
