SAVE THE BLUE BUTTERFLY
The Issue
Since 1976, the El Segundo Blue Butterfly has been an endangered species. Now, in 2020, it nears extinction. These butterflies require Coastal Buckwheat as their natural food source, to mate, lay eggs, feed on pollen & nectar, in order to flourish. Sadly, the few colonies where Coastal Buckwheat is found is nearly gone due to our drought.
Friends of the Jungle aims to create a Blue Butterfly sanctuary in Playa Del Rey, alongside Ballona Wetlands. This habitat will transform a City owned vacant lot into a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem, so that the Blue Butterfly can flourish!
This landmark garden will provide beautification to the unsightly area and ultimately be appreciated by the many pedestrians and drivers that pass by.
