There is a huge roller skate community here in Oakland with no spaces designated for roller skating. Roller skaters often use basketball and tennis courts which causes conflict and displaces skaters when those spaces are used for their intended purposes.

In the interest of belonging and inclusion, the roller skating community reached out to the director of DeFremery Park and asked for a safe place to skate that adds value to the park community. We want to turn the unused area of asphalt that lies next to the softball field, pool, basketball and tennis courts, and skate park and turn it into a new smooth surface specifically for roller skating. We want this space to become a community gathering area that expands the park's program to included roller skating and roller dance, integrate STEAM learning for children, and host special events that benefit the park and community.

It's important the roller skating area remains accessible and free to the public so everyone can be involved.

We want to honor and continue the rich history of this park with a skate plaza that is free and accessible to all, giving the neighborhood community members another avenue for recreation in a park that is already a cultural jewel.
