Dear supporters,
Today Sefton Council released an FAQ about their plans for The Salfordian. Far from offering reassurance, it has only confirmed that this proposal is wholly inappropriate for our community.
- No consultation before the decision: The Cabinet will decide on 2 October whether to acquire the building. Consultation would only happen later as part of the planning process. In other words, the purchase will be agreed without residents having any say.
- Offenders will be housed there: The FAQ states that applicants leaving custody are among those eligible under the Council’s statutory duties. This is written directly into the proposal.
- 24/7 staffing reveals the model: While presented as a safeguard, 24-hour staffing is the model used nationally for hostels supporting people with complex needs. This can include people with addiction and mental health challenges and probation placements for offenders of varying risk levels.
- Scale matters: The Salfordian is a 25-room, Grade II-listed former hotel. This is not a small scheme but one of the largest facilities of its kind in the area, and its impact on the community will be felt accordingly.
The Salfordian sits directly opposite Hesketh Park and overlooks Argyle Tennis Courts. This is not the right location for such accommodation.
We cannot allow this proposal to go through. Please share this update with everyone you know in Sefton. Our target is 5,000 signatures to show the strength of community opposition. We are being denied the chance to have our voices heard. Every signature matters more than ever.
Together we can demand transparency, consultation, and safeguarding for Southport.
