Support Community Safety by Reconstructing Empire/Washington Intersection
Over four years, 29 people been killed or injured at two dangerous intersections in Brooklyn--and one of them is in our district. The Department of Transportation has a plan to improve this intersection and protect our community, and the community must support it.
I live a few blocks away, and it's clear that the "collision" of Washington, Franklin and Empire is a mess. Car patterns are unpredictable. Pedestrian crosswalks are oddly placed. Worst, children and the elderly don't have enough time to get across safely.
The DOT saw the problem, figured out a solution, and set aside money to make the changes. They'll turn that block of Franklin into a mini-park, and create a few turn-only lanes. All we have to do is support them.
So who wins?
...KIDS: children under the age of 16 years are most likely to be struck by motor vehicles.
...The ELDERLY: seniors are more likely to die after being hit by a car.
...BICYCLISTS: Good traffic flow helps pedestrians and bicyclists.
...EVERYONE who is headed to the subway, or Prospect Park, or the Botanic Garden, or Checkers, or anything else that makes our neighborhood wonderful.
So who loses?
.........A few drivers who now have one option for a right turn, instead of two.
I am unwilling to watch my neighbors die, in order to give cars an extra right turn. What about you?
