Last summer, while meticulously building my humble garden, a vision blossomed—a tranquil spot where community members could pause, sit, and soak in the tranquillity of nature’s simple beauty. This vision came with a heartfelt desire to share that serene experience with the neighbors and friends residing in our dearly cherished community.

Unfortunately, current regulations do not permit me to place a bench on the parkway grass without written consent, which serves as a perfect vantage point for appreciating the quiet elegance of my garden. This isn’t merely a personal wish but a communal one—aspiring to transform a small corner of our neighborhood into a gathering place where friendships can blossom much like the flowers I tend to daily.

There are countless benefits to introducing such a communal space. Research from the Project for Public Spaces has shown that sitting areas in neighborhoods can significantly enhance community interactions, reduce crime rates by keeping neighborhoods lively, and even relieve stress for those who take a moment to sit and reflect. In fact, public spaces such as these not only boost the quality of life but also serve as a foundation for healthier, more harmonious communities.

Our local area, by embracing this opportunity, can pave the way for stronger neighborhood ties. The addition of a simple bench could transform moments spent in isolation into communal joys, inviting everyone into a dialogue with nature, themselves, and each other. Establishing a public bench does not require enormous funding or extensive resources, yet the impact is profound and long-lasting.

I urge the local council to revisit our community regulations, and work with us in examining feasible solutions like the installation and placement of our small, eco-friendly bench. Which is located less than a block from our community’s downtown area. One block from one of the busiest churches in our neighborhood and two blocks from two schools. We have explored and implemented options to ensure safety, accessibility, and aesthetic harmony with the current landscape. There’s no need to Leverage community resources or sponsors to fund and maintain this bench as we have fully funded and agree to take on the responsibilities of any maintenance required for the bench ourselves. This can include putting it away for the winter season.
