Hi all,

You may have heard how Justice Mossop ruled in late June that major elements of the case are to be held in closed court, following the Attorney-General’s recommendation.

Bernard Collaery has decided to appeal this decision, which is good news. On Friday, his lawyers advised the ACT supreme court that an appeal was likely to be lodged (which needs to be done by 24 July). This way, the matter will be reviewed by more members of the judiciary & one can hope that they rule in favour of a more open trial. Or better still, that the federal government decides to drop the case (as we’ve been calling for in our petition).

Ironically, the government made a public interest immunity claim, arguing that the release of sensitive information would harm Australia’s international relations. No doubt ignorant of the fact that their conduct to-date has already harmed Australia’s esteem on the international front as a trusted ally.

Go well, Rohini
