Commissioner Ian Stewart: Send my rapist to prison

Many people are blissfully unaware of the consequences of rape for the victim. These people are sheltered from the horrific reality that faces sexual abuse victims in Queensland.
When I was 12 years old I was raped by an 18-year-old male in a public bathroom in a secluded area. Disgusted, ashamed, unclean; I began having severe mental health issues that continue to dictate my everyday life. Clinical depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, bulimia and suicidal tendencies are now a 'normal' part of my life. I ran away at 14 years old for 3 days and spent 3 years in a specialised child and youth mental health treatment centre for children with severe issues. It was here that I was diagnosed with clinical depression, bulimia, anxiety and suicidal tendencies and put on strong anti-depressant medication to provide some stability.
My family and I all entered therapy and my parents learnt how to effectively parent my unpredictable and turbulent nature due to my mental illness.
I knew that the thing that had upset my life so violently had all but slipped from my rapists' mind. In early 2017, I learnt that my rapist was jailed for rape/sexual assault to a minor and had been released. In June 2017, I met another girl who had fallen victim to his disturbing sexual urges: she had been sexually assaulted at 14.
I have been robbed of my chance to have a normal life. I am struggling with school and my once-bright future has now dimmed. I dreamed of becoming a marine biologist, but now, most days, I cannot get out of bed due to extreme anxiety, thoughts of suicide and depression.
To all Queensland Members of Parliament and members of the Queensland Police Force: my rapist has shown disturbing patterns of rape and sexual assault of minors. He clearly feels no remorse for his actions and is a danger to other young girls in society. I do not want other vulnerable young girls to fall victim to the same predatory man that I was abused by. It is your responsibility to protect innocent children from predators like this. Please do not release him.
