Today I updated the text of the letter that will go to Michael D. McCurry, Co-Chair, the Commission on Presidential Debates.
The text follows:
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Libertarian candidates for President and Vice President of the United States of America be included in each of the 2016 Presidential Debates.
This election year is not normal. Polls at this stage of the campaign (7/31/16) show 60 to 70 percent of voters have unfavorable views of the Republican and Democratic candidates. Almost 20 percent say neither candidate is honest and trustworthy.
In this highly charged political environment, the rational for a 15 percent poll number threshold for debate candidates is both irrational and absurd.
To permit debates with only two candidates will be an insult to the intelligence, maturity and concern for America of the voting public.
The American voter deserves better. The American voter deserves to see candidates, with a chance to win the electoral college, go head to head to head on the same stage in answer to the same questions. We are adults. Let us decide who gets our vote; not the Commission.
