Commemorate Alexei Navalny’s courage with a permanent London memorial
The Issue
Following the recent death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a Russian penal colony, people have been able to pay their respects to him at a memorial outside the Russian Embassy in Queensway, central London.
There are huge amounts of tributes visible outside the embassy, from bouquets of flowers and candles to handwritten signs that express people’s gratitude for Mr Navalny’s determination and courage and their sorrow at his death
I am calling for the Mayor of London, London council members and London MPs to consider installing a permanent memorial in London to honour Mr Navalny’s memory and to celebrate the strength, dedication and moral courage he showed in his work as a Russian opposition leader.
London has a proud tradition of celebrating and commemorating brave people who have fought hard to preserve values such as democracy, freedom and peace, from the suffragettes to Karl Marx and Mahatma Gandhi.
More recently, Camden Council commemorated the Russian dissident Boris Nemtsov, who was killed by the Russian government in 2015, by naming a Highgate junction - Boris Nemtsov Place - after him.
Please consider signing and sharing this petition if you would like a permanent memorial to be created in London to honour Alexei Navalny’s life and legacy.
Thank you.
