Cancel The Daily Show With Trevor Noah

The Issue

Trevor Noah's comments on his show "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" on May 11, 2021 were not only insensitive towards Jews around the world, but dangerous in that they were one sided and reinforced an antisemitic narrative that Trevor Noah has continually pushed in his past. In his comments, Trevor likened Israel defending itself from Hamas (a globally recognized terrorist organization) in the following manner:

"If you are in a fight where the other person cannot beat you, how hard should you retaliate when they try to hurt you? ... If a man has a knife, should the cops shoot him?"

Noah's above analogies seem ludicrous when compared with the factual events he is referencing: namely that Hamas (a globally recognized terrorist organization) decided to fire deadly rockets into the democratic and sovereign country of Israel with the exclusive purpose of killing innocent civilians. If Hamas did the same thing to the United States and the United States responded in a similar manner as Israel, would Noah have the same sentiment? If not, then why is it okay for him to single out the Jewish state of Israel? Unfortunately this is a pattern of Noah's.

Among several twitter comments that Trevor Noah has posted in the past that shine a light on his feelings towards Jewish people is the below, in which Noah jokingly states he almost "bumped" (slang in some areas for "killing") a Jewish KID in his "German" car (a reference to Nazi Germany which resulted in the genocide of over 6 million Jews). Supposedly this was surfaced when Noah was named as the Daily Show host years ago but Comedy Central apparently looked the other way. Hopefully in light of Noah's recent comments, this quote and others like it are contextualized properly as a pattern for the host.

Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!

Even if we can accept the fact that Noah is a misinformed, arrogant TV-show host, we cannot excuse the fact that he has an audience that does not have the benefit of a full picture on issues in which Noah purposefully pushes the one side he believes in, even if it results in hate and in this case antisemitism. In today's world where antisemitism is at heightened levels not last seen since the 1930s when Jews were exterminated during the Holocaust, which necessitated a Jewish state in order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again to begin with, a person with an audience such as Noah's needs to be responsible in how narratives are portrayed given his narrative on the issue at hand played right into the hands of antisemitic people looking for any reason to harbor hate and retaliate against Jews around the world.

What's worse: Facing backlash, Trevor didn't even apologize. Instead, his PR team pushed a media story that Noah broke up with his girlfriend in order to "push down" the backlash against his arrogant, hate-fueling and antisemitic comments.

We ask Comedy Central and/or its parent organization of ViacomCBS to look into this matter and take the appropriate action. Given Noah's past behavior of similar antisemitic comments and his harboring of negative feelings towards the Jewish population, we demand a new host for the Daily Show and pledge to not watch Comedy Central until such change is taken. By not taking action, Comedy Central and ViacomCBS are supporting Noah's hate speech and showing the world that it is okay to promote antisemitic comments.
