Combine principals for Bethel and Royalton elementary schools
The Issue
The burden on taxpayers in Bethel and Royalton, Vermont has reached a tipping point. As a resident of this community, I've seen firsthand how our schools are facing financial strains due to unnecessary administrative duplications. Our elementary schools are only a short distance apart, yet each has its own principal. This is a structure we used to manage differently, and it's time to revisit that effective model.
Historically, these schools shared a principal, which ensured a more efficient use of resources without compromising the quality of education. By combining the principal roles once again, we can significantly reduce overhead costs, allocate funds to more critical areas such as classroom resources and student programs, and ease the tax burden on our community.
Currently, each school also employs a middle or high school principal who can easily assist or step in as needed, ensuring that the students at both schools continue to receive excellent leadership and oversight, even on days when the elementary principal is at the other site. This system worked well before and can be more effectively managed now with clear scheduling and robust communication strategies.
In today's educational landscape, where every dollar counts, replicating administration in closely-knit and small school districts like ours is a luxury we simply cannot afford. The size and proximity of Bethel and Royalton elementary schools make this a logical, pragmatic decision that will benefit students, staff, and residents alike.
I urge the district administration and school boards to reconsider and implement this solution—a solution rooted in our history, responsive to our present, and mindful of our future. By signing this petition, you're helping to create a more sustainable educational environment for our children and a more financially responsible community structure.
