Combatting Antisemitism via Proper Education
The Issue
Dr. Anna Nolin
Superintendent of Newton Schools
Office of the Superintendent
Newton, MA
We, the undersigned parents of Newton and Massachusetts, given the tumultuous and dangerous climate engulfing our community since the massacre of more than 1,200 Israelis by Hamas terrorists on October 7th, request a special educational session so that all the students can gather for a history lesson, and to learn about current affairs, specifically about the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
We implore that this lesson be taught impartially, and discuss the issue in an historically accurate fashion. We acknowledge that Israel and the Middle East are already taught in the school system, but the misinformation and hate coming out of the school system makes it clear that something about Israel and the Middle East education is lacking in Newton, and Massachusetts as a whole. We concede that this is an exceptional request on our part, but this is an exceptional time in world history, and if we want to stem this rising tide of Jew hatred, the schools must ensure the topic is taught correctly.
Our children are scared because they face an existential threat. Yet, in the one place where they should feel safe to learn—in school—they are constantly bombarded with reminders that people—including their classmates and members of the community—hate them for being Jewish and where they come from. This is unacceptable at any time, but especially now as people feel emboldened to proclaim their hatred of Jews and Israelis.
Please consider our request on this urgent matter, and accept the need to conduct a special educational session on the history of Israel, the Middle East, and current affairs.
