Petition update

CHANGES IN PETITION LANGUAGE

Colorado Law Students for Diploma Privilege

Jul 2, 2020 —

Dear Signees,

I want to alert you to some slight alterations to the petition.

1: In paragraph 1: we have changed the language from “legal professionals in the community” to “present and future members of the Colorado legal community” to more accurately reflect who are stakeholders and signees include.

2: Under “Alternatives to the Bar” section we have added the sentence: “In line with the steps that other states have taken, we support equitable alternatives for out-of-state applicants seeking to join the Colorado Bar.”

The omission of out-of-staters was not intended to exclude them, and our intent and belief was that this petition, as it stood, would benefit both in-state and out-of-state applicants. However, after significant discussion and public comment, we recognize now the importance of making this support explicit, especially in light of the fact that similar efforts in other states have explicitly included out-of-staters. As such, we have included this language.

3: We have updated the list of what other states have done regarding alternatives to the bar exam.

4. Pursuant to the bar examiners most recent announcement, we have added a new subpoint 3 of “Dangers, infeasibility, and policy considerations justifying an alternative to the July Bar Exam”: “On July 1, 2020, the Bar Exam Administrators announced that due to COVID-19, they will not mail hard copies of admission badges, and instead are providing them electronically.”

If you disagree with any of these amendments, please feel free to email me at ashulman20@law.du.edu and we will remove your name from our list of signatures.

I apologize for any frustration or inconvenience these changes may have caused you, and please feel free to reach out should you have any questions or concerns.
