Pass a Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights in Colorado

The Issue

In Colorado, sexual assault survivors are not guaranteed to receive their civil rights. They are left to navigate a confusing system all alone. As reports of sexual assault have only increased in the wake of Covid-19, the 1.8 million survivors in Colorado need these civil rights protections now more than ever before.

Currently, a bill has been introduced to the Colorado House of Representatives, HB23-1199, to ensure these rights in our state. Even though this bill has bipartisan support, it must be heard in committee in order to be voted on and passed. This is imperative as survivors deserve to have these rights ensured.

I'm calling on Colorado to pass a Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights that will guarantee comprehensive, common-sense civil rights for survivors:

Key Rights:

  • The right to a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit tracking system
  • The right to have a counselor and/or support person present at all stages of medical exams and legal interviews.
  • The right to privileged communication between counselor/support person and survivor.
  • The right to shower after exam at no cost.

This is a crisis for 1.8 million survivors in Colorado, and it's time for our legislators to do something about it.
