Skip all the icky election news, and do something you can feel good about - donate to a cause which will protect your parks. On May 24th, 2016, the Colorado Springs City Council voted 6 to 3 to approve the trade of one of our nation's oldest (on the National Registry of Historic Places) and most iconic parks, North Cheyenne Cañon to the Broadmoor Hotel. Now, we are forced to stop this disturbing precedent to commercialize historic parklands. The legislative action taken by the Colorado Springs City Council has regional and national ramifications for historic parklands across the United States.
Strawberry Fields was purchased by the voters of Colorado Springs in 1885 because the public was denied access due to the onerous tolls being charged by private ownership. A citizen's group lead by Helen Hunt Jackson worked for two years to make this park open and free to the public. The citizens of Colorado Springs were not only willing to purchase Strawberry Fields by a vote, but they were willing to tax themselves to purchase it so it could dedicated as a “free” open space park forever.
We, and our lawyers believe, that there is an important precedent at risk here. We believe that the Park Board and City Council don't have the authority to give away or sell “dedicated” parkland purchased and paid for by the voters without a vote of the people. And, we believe other communities around the country would benefit from a court decision in our favor as well.
We need your help. On behalf of the thriving wildlife community who live in Strawberry Fields and other historic parklands across the country, and the public who rely on our scarce parklands for free respite and recreation, we hope you will donate to this precedent setting cause. Any donation, no matter the size, will help us defend our precious public lands.
