Petition updateNO to the Broadmoor Land Swap. Our Historic Wildlife & Open Space is Not For Sale.Land Swap Meeting Highlights at 1/28/2016 Bear Creek Nature Center
Colorado Springs CitizensColorado Springs, CO, United States
29 Jan 2016
The meeting was very well attended though several people opted out due to the format of the meeting. Thank you to those who went and voiced your views. If you haven't done so already, you should share your views with City Council, the Friends of Cheyenne Canon, Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates. We suggest emailing your views to: AllCouncil@springsgov.com And copying that email to: friendsofcheyennecanon@gmail.com cory@medwheel.org savecheyennemountain@gmail.com If you have already sent emails, you should make sure to forward copies to the above three who are all groups opposing the land swap. It helps to share information openly and widely. Concerns were raised regarding deed restrictions not transferring when land is sold. Zoning designations being changeable and land appraisals being independent and methodology disclosed as well as sources. You should continue to ask questions on all these important matters, but as the Friends of Cheyenne Canon's release referenced, the environmental impact is an important item. The Strawberry Fields land is home to a thriving wildlife population, in large part, due to the lower trafficked trails in that area combined with an abundance of food sources in and adjacent to it. In the meantime, below are photos of a comment board for feedback that an attendee took towards the end of the meeting to share with those would could not attend. While there are a couple that were too covered to decipher, we will try to transcribe the rest below for those would couldn't attend and want to get a flavor for some of the comments: "The people of Colorado Springs are getting very little, if anything, in this land swap while the Broadmoor will be commandeering some prime, pristine real estate, especially Strawberry Fields, to generate profit and develop a commercial enterprise (or two!) We don't need what they're offering!" "Colorado Natural Heritage Program rates N Cheyenne Canon as high biodiversity value and suggests S Cheyenne Canon would have similar value. Has Strawberry Hill been evaluated for biodiversity or plant/wildlife values?" "Buy what we need, but never divest what we have. Do not give or sell land to the Broadmoor!" "Why would the Broadmoor need to restrict access to the west side of the parcel where the caves are?" "Too many 'if's'. Not enough 'wills'. Don't trust the Bmoor. "For now Broadmoor says it's not building there & public access is assured, but what could they change after 5 years or so?" "The City of Colorado Springs has $17 million to acquire property. Use it. Don't be strong armed by the Broadmoor!" "DON'T DO THE LAND SWAP! THE BEAUTIFUL ROCKS OF OLD STAGE WILL BECOME PRIVATE PROPERTY! IT SETS A BAD PRECENDENT!" "My concern is what do you do about fire, flood and flies. This land seems very fragile to me." "People using Starsmore parking lot for 7 Falls. How will this be addressed when compounded?" "I am a long time horse owner - no amount of management will prevent total destruction of terrain suggested. Look forward to fire, flood and flies....Cheyenne Creek flood even showed us how destructive a day of rain can be." "Don't do this! Huge impact on Cheyenne Canon. Look at traffic." "It is not necessary to have another riding stables when there is a high rated one is so close. Stables at the Broadmoor (also known as) Old Stage Riding Stables is a family business - why jeopardize a small family when the Broadmoor has so much? The proposed land for Heritage Trails goes through/by the Stables at the Broadmoor." "Why doesn't the Broadmoor keep using the stables they used to up Stage Rd? No need for another." "We do not believe that a second horseback riding stable is appropriate when there is a stable in operation in the same area. This is a family business that doesn't have any other source of income, unlike the Broadmoor. Even a small stable could put this family out of business." "What about parking for 7 Falls has occupied N. Cheyenne Canon picnic spots. The shuttle has only been partly used. Will it be a similar situation for the stables parking?" "...why monopolize the canon?" "We use N. Cheyenne Canon and Mt. Musoco trail a lot and Strawberry Fields hardly at all. So we think this is a great initiative. We are 1000% behind it." "This property is too close to dangerous land for horses. Example: falling rock, unsecure ground. Who will supervise this? Who will keep the horses on the proper trails?" Here's wishing everyone a lovely weekend. Take a hike in Strawberry Fields. It's a very special place indeed.
