Consider NO-KILL for Domestic Animal Services Shelter
Consider NO-KILL for Domestic Animal Services Shelter
The Issue
In a no-kill shelter model, 90% of the animals housed in a shelter must be saved. Collier DAS (CDAS) has been criticized for the high number of animals euthanized annually. As a public shelter, CDAS must accept any animal brought to it, adoptable or not, and those not adopted are eventually killed even though they're considered adoptable. They continue to want to be an average shelter within the industry. Many of the programs in place at CDAS need to grow on a bigger scale, and we need community involvement, e.g.,
Comprehensive adoption programs
Free-roaming cat trap/neuter/return programs
High-volume, affordable, or free spay/neuter services
Large-scale volunteer foster care programs
Rescue group transfers
Proactive pet retention programs
Proactive pet redemptions
Medical and behavioral programs
Public relations/community involvement
Volunteer programs
Stricter Enforcement
in many cases enforcement is not being done. Their are cases that have been personally worked on in Immokalee, and the outcome for the animals was horrible. All backup and proof that nothing was done and animals suffered because of it is available.
Many community leaders are behind this petition and want to see it become reality.
