Make Irish an Optional Subject

The Issue

We are a group of 6 students who want to set up an initiative to make irish an optional subject. This is for our leaving cert politics and society project.

We believe that in an education system that is so points based, students should be able to chose their subjects to give them the best advantage.  Like any subject some students are weaker than others and should not be forced to take Irish for the leaving certificate. Unless how irish is taught is changed at primary school level then we believe it is completely unfair to force students to take the language.

There is a problem in the irish education system and leaving certificate students could be the ones paying for it.
