Install a blue light emergency system on UGA's campus.

The Issue

Student safety should be of the utmost importance at the University of Georgia which is why we are pushing for the installation of an emergency blue light system around campus. UGA has over 39k students and over 750 acres of campus yet there is no system or program for students to feel safe. Week after week we are receiving ‘Special Safety Update’ emails informing us of crimes happening around us and hear of tragedies occurring to UGA’s own students. IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE.

UGA is one of the only major public universities to not have a physical emergency system. UGA administration may say that they do, and that is the ‘LiveSafe’ app, but many students here are unaware of this app, confused about how to use it, and not everyone has access to a phone, specifically a charged phone, at all times.

The unlit side streets and even major roads in Athens are dangerous, there’s no denying it, but the installation of these phone booths and bright light posts will bring students a sense of comfort. If you are unaware of these emergencies system, they are commonly used on college campuses and are bright blue light pillars that with the press of a button connects you to the local police within seconds. If you have ever felt unsafe walking around your college campus, walking home from downtown Athens or just around campus, specifically at night, please sign this petition!!! Help us bring this to reality :)

Thank you! - Erin, Bailey & Abby

The Decision Makers

UGA administration
Hello Erin, Bailey, and Abby. I appreciate the work that you and others are doing to promote safety on the UGA campus. As you know, safety has and continues to be a partnership between students/faculty/staff and the UGA Police and other groups responsible for safety/security on the campus and in the community. I have included a link below from the UGA Police Department's safety FAQ page that will provide more insight about emergency call boxes on the UGA campus. This is likely the best information source on the topic. Thank you, and stay safe. Steve Harris Director of the University of Georgia’s Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness
