We were told from when we were very young, “If you work hard and do the right thing, you can become who you dream to be.” In the process of life, there will be many challenges and obstacles in our way, but as long as we persevere, one day, our dreams would come true. However, the fact is, sometimes life has a way of placing obstacles in our path that we cannot overcome alone. This petition is a way to allow the silent cry of the College of William and Mary student athletes to be heard.

During the spring/summer of this year (2019), the William and Mary athletic department had put into effect many new policies. Several of these policies are relatively unknown by the vast majority of the student body and one of these new policies in particular has caused great distress to the community’s student athletes. Unlike many collegiate athletic departments in the United States, athletes who are currently on any William and Mary athletic team (recruited or walk-ons), are considered ineligible for any increase in athletic financial aid (athletic scholarships) – even if their performance has increased and they have become a vital member necessary for the success of the team. In other words, if a freshman athlete (say, a walk-on) is allowed a spot on a team roster, it is currently impossible for that student to earn any athletic scholarship even if that athlete becomes the top player on the team. Additionally, if a freshman athlete is recruited and promised a certain scholarship amount, all coaches are prohibited from increasing that scholarship amount in response to increased performance (more goals scored, touchdowns made, personal bests set in time or distance, etc.) As far as the William and Mary athletics department is concerned, good performance will not be rewarded financially under any circumstance.

Many student athletes (especially those from out-of-state) are now questioning the level of support they receive from their athletic department. There are many student athletes who have been training for years with the dream of earning a scholarship at a prestigious university – and these dreams are destroyed by the College of William and Mary Athletic Department. Why would a student athlete continue to compete for William and Mary when they don’t reward their hard work on the field, around the track, and in the pool? Additionally, why would prospective student athletes decide to attend a school which doesn’t allow rewards for success and achievements?

It appears we may have been misled by those who told us to fight for our dreams. Perhaps, “working hard” and “doing the right thing” will never get your dreams to come true. Alone, for student athletes, this may be the end of the line. However, we are not alone and there is strength in numbers. This petition is a way to get the word out about the injustice the William and Mary Athletic Department is currently performing on its student athletes. Primarily, we are requesting an immediate repeal of this policy in regard to student athletes. Additionally, we are asking for a student town hall featuring the William and Mary Athletic Director Samantha K. Huge. We are hoping this town hall will be open to all members of the William and Mary community, including but not limited to, students, student athletes, faculty, staff, and donors. It is our desire that student athletes will be given the opportunity to express their reservations directly to Director Huge (via a microphone) and have a question and answer session open for anyone in attendance. It is our goal that once the student body’s voice has been heard, the Athletic Department will change this policy and allow scholarships to be awarded to deserving student athletes. Hopefully, the College of William and Mary will soon be able to prove its commitment to open communication and transparency by scheduling a town hall and welcoming the student body to attend.
