Consider the establishment of an LGBTQ+ Community Resource Center at College of the Canyons.
The Issue
An LGBTQ+ Community Resource Center at COC would aim to promote equality, but also provide a place where students can receive informaton they may not receive elsewhere, as well as to provide a safe place free of judgement.
- -Problems (bullying) for the LGBTQ+ community are not contained within COC
- -LGBTQ+ students of all ages are still struggling with bullying
- -For many LGBTQ+ youth, intolerance and prejudice make school a hostile and dangerous place.
- -According to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), 20% of college students fear for their physical safety due to their gender identity or their perceived sexual orientation, and 8% of college students identify themselves as LGBTQ
- -According to the Q Research Institute for Higher Education, a new research study in the United States shows that almost one-quarter (23%) of LGBTQ college students reported experiencing harassment.
- -Students who build support networks and find a sense of connection with a college are much more likely to succeed.
Whereas, the creation of LGBTQ+ Resource Centers have proven to educate college campuses as well as local communities, and provide social, fun, and networking events and activities centered around LGBTQ+ issues.
