On November 2, 2020, Bridgewater State University announced that due to MTEL reports saying they are now back to normal with Communication & Literacy core, the waiver was for one semester only and they do NOT anticipate another MTEL waiver for Spring 2021 registration. However, in order for us to be accepted into our Professional Educator program and to register for our education courses in the 300-400 levels, we must pass the Communication & Literacy core. BSU provided a waiver for the Fall 2020 semester since Covid-19 prevented many of us students from taking the MTEL. What they fail to acknowledge is that just because the MTEL reports say they are now “back to normal,” we are still in the middle of this pandemic and not under normal circumstances by any means. We have expressed our concerns about the MTEL being waived again to our professors. We are the people impacted by the decisions the department makes but they unfortunately did not listen to us or give us any say in this matter.

They made this announcement about not anticipating another MTEL waiver two weeks before class registration which puts the vast majority of us not in the Professional Program in a tough position. First of all, the MTEL results take around a month, if not longer, to come back. That being said, even if everyone took the test right now to try to register for their classes, the results would more than likely not be in by then. On top of that, we are required to get a passing score on both parts of the test and many people fail the first time they take it and have to retake it which sets them even more behind. There are also people who have tried to take the test and it has been canceled or moved on them numerous times because of Covid-19 mandates. The tests are also fairly expensive and because of the pandemic many of us are facing financial hardships right now and cannot afford to take them.

Lastly, the 300-400 level classes do not even pertain to the MTEL or teach anything regarding the tests, but we are being kept out of them because we have not taken it. I have spoken with fellow classmates who are going to be forced to take a gap semester in the spring because they only have a couple of classes left that they will not be able to take due to this decision. We feel completely lost and unaccommodated by the school right now and we need your help. The first day of registration for undergraduate students is November 17. By then I hope to gather enough signatures to have BSU reconsider their decision in providing us with another MTEL waiver for Spring 2021 registration.
