My son, a young student at Colin Powell’s elementary school in Union City, NJ, has been subjected to an appalling experience no child should endure. His kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Morsella, not only wrongfully accused him of misconduct but physically assaulted him by throwing him out of the classroom—a scene I, regrettably, witnessed myself. It didn’t just stop at physical abuse, she also robbed my son of his diamond 'J' pendant and hurled racist remarks, by telling my son that black is an ugly color. This behavior is not just unacceptable; it's a gross violation of the values we hold.
Despite taking the matter up with Mr. Hannah, the vice principal, Mrs. Diaz, the principal, and Mrs. Sabbatto from the Union City Board of Education, justice remains elusive. Each conversation leaves my son’s dignity and our concerns unaddressed, signaling a troubling norm of overlooking student welfare and failing to act against racial discrimination and physical violence in what should be a nurturing educational environment.
No child should ever have to face fear or trauma in a place meant for learning and growth. The actions and words of Mrs. Morsella not only tarnish the reputation of educators but also deeply injure the innocence and trust of young minds. It’s crucial that the Union City school authorities take stringent actions against such behavior to ensure a safe and positive learning space for all children.
This petition is not just for my son; it's for every child in Union City who deserves to feel safe and respected in school. I urge the community to rally together to insist on immediate actions from the school and the Board of Education to investigate thoroughly, discipline Mrs. Morsella accordingly, and institute policies that safeguard our children from any form of abuse.
