Yesterday me and my family attended Drayton Manor Park in Tamworth (Sunday 5th June). Although it was a lovely day out when we took the trip to the Zoo via the Thomas Land train we were appalled with what we saw. On Drayton Manors website it states "Drayton Manor Zoo is a fascinating place to explore with 15 acres of open plan zoo home to over 100 animals from all over the world including endangered species." While wondering around the zoo the cages all appeared to be empty. Not forgetting how small the cages are in the first place. I was disgusted as the owl's cage appeared to be larger than the black panther’s cage (who of which has now died.) In 2012 I recall the black panther appearing to be very lonely and depressed. The age of the animals when dying in this enclosure is a noticeable difference to that of the life expectancy in the wild or even when maintained appropriately. Why should should animals be living in here for our entertainment? The chimpanzees body language shows just how depressed it is which would be put down to the loss of its partner, just by observation this was distressing to me. The chimpanzee has also became extremely unsociable with the visitors at Drayton Manor Park, constantly launching whatever he can at the glass in attempt to get them which they would then torment the poor chimp which made it noticeably angry as he swayed back and forth. don’t feel like they get what they need and deserve. The parks zoo is far from lifelike and nothing compared to the wild. The sound from the rides and park also cannot be good for the animals, not forgetting the fireworks (which I note are amazing) but for a three day long period... animals are petrified by noises like this and in my opinion they should aleast be put into a sound proof large shelter just to ease any distress which could be caused. I believe Drayton Manors Zoo has been run down for a long time now and either need serious investment to get these animals healthy and happy state or the zoo should be closed down.
