Catirina Klein started this petition to Coconino County Public Works Department and

It's time to stand together on the issues we will face if we don't stop the Truck Barn Project that is being proposed to be built in the Coconino National Forest at the end of Hillside Drive.  It will cover 3 acres into the forest (butted up against a residential area) and house a 5000 square ft facility to hold numerous heavy duty road maintenance equipment/machinery and huge tanks to fuel them. These road graders, 10 wheel dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and a asphalt roller will be potentially servicing county roads from Kachina Village to Stoneman Lake Rd. These heavy duty vehicles will be driving back and forth through Munds Park's roads from early in the morning throughout the day/evening, so most ALL residents will impacted by this traffic and noise. The following will also be impacted:

  • Our wildlife will all be scared away and uprooted from their homes, and we will no longer be able to enjoy them in the surrounding areas
  • The Hillside trail head will be gone
  • Pedestrians walking and children playing
  • The noise of the equipment's back-up beepers (potentially at all hours) are 97 to 110 decibels, which is equivalent to a live rock concert, jack hammer, helicopter at 100 ft, and a car horn at 3 ft.  (per Purdue University). In a 2010 report titled Technology for a Quieter America, cited that backup beepers as 1 of the 6 top noise sources people associated  with behavioral, health, and emotional consequences
  • Housing that much fuel and propane is a safety and fire threat to our forest and the surrounding neighborhoods
  • Potential light pollution from parking lot, facility, and equipment coming in and out
  •  The wear and tear on our streets due to this heavy equipment
  •  Property values will plummet for surrounding neighborhoods

I'm sure there are other important things that are not listing; however, we wanted to highlight safety, security, and the preservation of our wildlife and the peace and tranquility. After all, this is why we bought a home in Munds Park and love it so much. Signing this will prove that this is not the right location for this type of facility and operation, and to find another location that is better suited and has no impact on our residents.  Also, please contact the Lands and Minerals Program Manager, Deirdre McLaughlin, at deirdre,mclaughlin@usda.gov or (928)527-3415.
