A Safe Pedestrian Crossing at Carrington Street/Forrest Road Intersection

A Safe Pedestrian Crossing at Carrington Street/Forrest Road Intersection
The issue
The local community need a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Forrest Road and Carrington Street, Hamilton Hill, WA, to ensure that vulnerable road users, including children, older residents and cyclists can use this crossing safely.
The lack of a safe pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Forrest Road and Carrington Street - an area with nearby schools and aged care facilities - is a hazardous situation for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists. The existing lights provide no safe crossing options for pedestrians, which has a direct impact on local willingness to walk shorter distances. The community has a number of nearby schools – primary and secondary – as well as elderly pedestrians, who find it difficult to negotiate the intersection safely. Students from the nearby schools can regularly be seen trying to cross this dangerous intersection either on foot or on their bicycles. Similarly, people using the various bus stops near this intersection are at risk. Other local residents use their car rather than walking the short distance to the local playground or school because they are anxious about using the crossing with young children and strollers.
Housing density in this area is increasing alongside population growth. Yet whilst housing increases, the surrounding infrastructure lags behind; safe pedestrian crossings are an important part of creating sustainable, thriving communities and reducing unnecessary car use.
We the undersigned observe that continual traffic at the intersection of Forrest Road and Carrington Street, an area with nearby schools and aged care facilities, is a hazardous situation for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists. The existing lights provide no safe crossing options for pedestrians, which has a direct impact on local willingness to walk short distances. The community has a number of nearby schools – primary and secondary – as well as elderly pedestrians, who find it difficult to negotiate the intersection safely.
The existing crossing is not fit for purpose and we ask Cockburn Council and Main Roads WA to install a safe pedestrian crossing as a matter of urgency.
