Coca Cola: Consumers do NOT want single-use plastic bottles
The Issue
The head of sustainability at Coca Cola, Bea Perez, recently told the BBC that it will not ditch single-use plastic bottles because "consumers still want them".
The company produces three million tonnes of plastic packaging a year - equivalent to 200,000 bottles a minute. It says that by 2030 50% of this will be made from recycled packaging. That still means that 100,000 bottles a minute (or equivalent) will be produced from non-recycled plastic.
This is not good enough.
Ocean plastic is killing countless birds, whales and marine life. It has formed giant islands in the ocean. It has broken down into micro plastics found in our food.
In 2018 the IPCC stated that we have 12 years left to limit the climate catastrophe- major corporations like Coca-Cola need to lead the change to protect our planet's future.
There are other options:
- Aluminium cans are lightweight, resealable (with a small amount of recycled plastic) and recyclable. Aluminium is also more likely to be recycled than plastic due to the cost incurred to create the virgin materials.
- Glass is returnable, reusable and recyclable at the end of it's life.
Please sign this petition if you are fed up of being told what YOU want by a company only out to protect their own profit margins, at the expense of our planet.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DO NOT WANT COCA COLA TO CONTINUE TO USE SINGLE USE PLASTIC BOTTLES. WE DEMAND THAT ALTERNATIVES ARE SOUGHT AND IMPLEMENTED WITH THE UPMOST URGENCY.
