When Cobb County announced that school would be returning as normal in the fall semester with the option for students to be fully online or fully in school, many were shocked to see that masks were only “encouraged”, instead of required. There have been countless studies proving that the wearing of masks helps to decrease the spread of Covid-19, and requiring all students (except those with justified medical excuses) to wear one while indoors in school would be a step in the right direction to helping keep everyone safe and healthy. With one quick google search, you can see that the numbers for Georgia in terms of coronavirus cases (and Cobb county specifically) are rising at a rapid and alarming rate. With making masks a requirement rather than just encouraging their use, we could help to slow the spread of the virus in a closed, non ventilated environment such as a school building. I know that at least at my school (Pope High School) there are barely any windows and therefore barely any ventilation, which is one of the main favors that contributes to the spread of the virus. Please, take a few seconds out of your day to help keep Cobb County students safe.
