Coastal Bend residents oppose Exxon/GCGV/SABIC petrochemical facility.

This petition had 1,343 supporters

This petition is open to ALL residents of Coastal Bend counties (Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, and San Patricio).

NOTE: This is a NEW petition and NOT related to previously circulated "No Tax Abatements and Tax Incentives for Exxon Mobil and SABIC" petition.

This petition is cosponsored by Portland Citizens United, the Clean Economy Coalition, and the Sierra Club.

Exxon Mobil, Gulf Coast Growth Ventures and Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation plan to build a massive petrochemical facility on the outskirts of Gregory and Portland, just beyond the northern shores of Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays. The facility will feature the “World’s Largest” Ethane Steam Cracker, two polyethylene (plastics) units, and a monoethylene glycol (antifreeze) unit.

The proposed facility will emit thousands of tons of contaminants, including nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, volatile organic compounds, and benzene. The facility will require the use of 7.3 billion gallons of water each year to operate.

This region is saturated with industries that release contaminants and pollutants into our air. This facility will only contribute to the deterioration of our environment and exacerbate the health risks that are well documented in our region. It will also use an inordinate, and unacceptable, amount of our precious water resources.

If you live, work, farm or ranch in Jim Wells, Kleberg, Kennedy, Aransas, Refugio, Nueces and San Patricio counties, you should be concerned that the Exxon/Saudi Arabia project will deplete your water resources by 20 million gallons a day, or 7.3 billion gallons per year, and sign this petition.

If you live, work, farm, or ranch within 25 miles of the proposed site, you should be concerned about the air pollution from this site, and sign this petition.

We, the undersigned residents of the Coastal Bend, oppose this facility.  We oppose the issuance of any air permits by TCEQ and any water rights or water usage that may support the facility. We urge Exxon, GCGV, and SABIC to conduct additional due diligence and locate their facility in an area that will not be near communities that will suffer the environmental impacts of its operations.

We further urge our local, state, and national representatives to advance this opposition in any and all forums available.
