Here in beautiful British Columbia, Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd., which operates over 96 per cent of the buses in the Lower Mainland, including Vancouver, North and West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, South Delta, Maple Ridge, Surrey, White Rock, and Langley, is apparently going to soon be making a purchase of new buses to add to its fleet. We, a growing number of concerned citizens, would like to persuade Coast Mountain Bus Company to purchase only 100 per cent Electric Buses from now on, and to do so more quickly. So far, the TransLink Low Carbon Fleet Strategy suggests only options; there is no plan, and even with the fastest suggestion, 64% by 2030 is not fast enough. Aiming to be 100% electric by 2050 is an unrealistic goal. We do not have that luxury of time. This is also more than an environmental issue; this is a health issue. Lung cancer has long been linked to air pollution, but did you know that many other types of cancer, including breast, liver, and pancreatic cancer, have all been linked to air pollution? It's also directly relevant to Covid-19: according to The Guardian, air pollution may be "one of the most important contributors” to Covid-19 deaths, as research shows 79% of Coronavirus deaths across Italy, Spain, France, and Germany have been in the most polluted regions.
