Coaldale Community:

It has come to the attention in our community that Coaldale town council has approved the construction of 4 flag poles to be built at the entrance to the new town hall (Civic Square Building). Three of the poles will be used for the traditional display of the Town of Coaldale, Alberta, and Canada flags respectively. The fourth pole is to be designated the “community flag pole”. 

Individual residents and community groups will be permitted to apply for their flag to be raised on the community pole for a designated time. The policy for this “community flag pole” is still under review at town hall. 

While displaying and promoting individual/group flags at the new town hall sounds positive, we believe that it will cause further division.  While one group’s flag is displayed another group may become offended or upset, and vice versa. One flag may be allowed, while another denied. How many flag applications will be permitted? Why should Coaldale town council alone, dictate what group is and is not supported in our community via a flag?

Our civic governments have a duty to be servants to the people, and should remain neutral as possible when choosing sides on social issues publicly. 

This petition is calling for the stop of construction and the dissolution of policy on any form or type of a “community flag pole” by the Town of Coaldale.  This will help prevent any offense or further division in our community.
