CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, FOX, CBS, and all other media outlets domestic and foreign (including local CT affiliates): Stay away from Newtown, CT before, during and after the December 14th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings!

Hi there! Thanks for clicking on the link to my petition!

My name is Jenny, I was born and raised in Connecticut and have lived only a short distance from Newtown for most of life. 3 years ago I got a job for a small publishing company on Main St. in Newtown, this place has been my home away from home and I am proud to be part of the community.

11 months ago as I sat at my desk I watched every manner of police car, fire truck and EMT van go by. When my co-worker got up and locked the front door I knew something was really wrong. We watched a live broadcast of the news on a computer monitor while less than a mile away first responders were rushing into Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Needless to say the weeks that followed were a media circus as reporters and news vans flooded into town. Getting my morning cup of coffee at the deli became a mission to dodge the cameras and microphones being shoved in my face. All of them--hungry for a story, a tear, a personal anecdote.

11 months later, people are still trying to grieve, to heal, to make sense of this tragedy.

Last night I read an article on Newtown Patch (local website/blog) about the national media planning to come to Newtown, CT on the Dec 14 Anniversary of the Sandy Hook School shooting despite being asked to stay home by town officials. I couldn't believe it! So after a sleepless night I started a petition on change.org this morning asking the national media outlets to stay away from Newtown on the anniversary.

No resident of Newtown deserves to be put through another media storm. There are no planned public memorials or programs, specifically so that the media won't have anything to stand and gawk at. On Dec 14th there won't be anything to see. But they are still planning to come, they have even gone so far as to contact local business owners to ask permission to park their news vans on private property. It's just so wrong.

So I'm standing up for them not only because they are my friends, family and co-workers, but because they are human beings and should be allowed to grieve, remember and honor those lost in private.

Will you stand with me by signing and sharing my petition with your friends and family? Maybe if we get enough signatures we can send a clear message to the news outlets: STAY HOME!

Excerpt taken from an open letter to the media on Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra's Blog: "Newtown has received great kindness and generosity these past 10 months. We are grateful and humbled by the expressions of love and support of friends and neighbors from near and far.  We ask now for patience and understanding as we approach the first anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook School.  Our community is choosing to remember and honor those who lost their lives in that awful tragedy in ways that are quiet, personal, and respectful – centered on the themes of kindness, love, and service to others.  We are wishing fervently that those many persons who wish us well, and the media, will allow us this time to be alone and quiet with time for personal and communal reflection."
