CNN Has to Stop Endangering Asian-Americans
CNN Has to Stop Endangering Asian-Americans
The Issue
On June 13th , CNN writers Alisha Ebrahimji and Alicia Lee opened their article by saying: “It’s a common rule in Asian-American households: Don’t bring back home a black boyfriend or girlfriend”.
Such baseless generalization amounts to the announcement to the world: Asian-Americans, you are racists! In today’s supercharged racial tension, which CNN and its medium peers have been working hard to create, this amounts to saying: Asian-Americans, you are to be condemned!
This blatant demonization gravely endangers the lives and wellbeing of all Asian-Americans, especially when CNN’s other actions are taken into account. Chris Cuomo, CNN's (in)famous host last weekend passionately asked in front of the camera: "Please, show me where it says protesters are supposed to be polite and peaceful" in his defense of trashing, looting, burning, and occasional killings.
Yes, CNN has singled out the enemy, Asian-Americans, and CNN has endorsed the means for treating the enemy: violence.
To make things worse, CNN and most of the media, academia, and too many politicians are creating an environment where enforcing the law is extremely difficult, if not completely impossible. That will seriously undermine public safety or even cause total lawlessness. The combination of these factors will make the Asian-American community extremely vulnerable. These are sufficient reasons for us to worry about the potential of disasters.
And such disaster happened not long ago. That is the savage violence against the Korean community in the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Blocks after blocks of businesses and residences owned by Korean-Americans were burned and looted. Scores of people were wounded. If not for their courageous defense using their guns, which held back large mob of armed attackers, heavy loss of lives would have been inevitable.
For these reasons, we, members of the Asian-American community, strongly condemn CNN’s categorization of our community, and hold CNN morally and materially responsible for ALL damages by ANY racially motivated violence against us. In the meantime, we demand CNN to
1. Sincerely apologize to our community and make material efforts to rectify our name
2. Fire Christ Cuomo, Alisha Ebrahimji and Alicia Lee immediately, and never use their services in any manner
3. Publicly denounce all forms of violence against any innocent targets
We, as members of the American family, also strongly appeal to all people working in the media and to the intellectual elites: It’s time to condemn ALL violence and to deescalate racial tensions, and to stop picking your favored races or groups and to stop identifying new enemies. By doing what you have been doing, you are making every race the enemy of every other race, every group the enemy of every other group. You have not been helping to create a diverse and inclusive society. To the contrary, you are making it impossible. If you continue your push in the current direction, the country will devolve into a civil war.
The truly diverse and inclusive society can only be built on the recognition of the fundamental facts that we all are fallible humans and we have to live with each other’s flaws, and that on occasions such flaws do cause tragedies. But we cannot respond to tragedies by creating new tragedies. There cannot be any positive outcome from doing this.
We also want to tell politicians of all parties: It is long overdue for you to assume the very basic responsibilities, i.e. protecting citizens’ lives and properties, protecting the smooth running of our country, solving problems within the democratic and legal framework and implementing reforms when necessary. You have performed politicking long enough. The country needs your loud and clear condemnation of ALL violence right away. You cannot let businesses and residences ransacked and burned because you are safe somewhere far away and you need some people’s votes. Your performance so far is an international shame. Without immediate change, you will be remembered in history for destroying all the progress America has made since its birth, although more progresses have yet to be made. But until you change your ways of doing business, very little progresses will be possible.
