CMS Schools Student Assignment - DON'T change Home School Guarantee
The Issue
Changing the student assignment to promote socio-economic and racial diversity in a way that sends students out of their home-school will result in the following issues -
1. Longer Transit Time: Students will need to spend unnecessarily longer hours on the bus before and after the school.
2. After-School Care issues: Current after-school programs support pick-ups and drops to schools in the home-school region. Any change to the school outside the home school will require significant changes to the after-school program as well and will incur additional expenses for the parents to help with the longer transit.
3. Parent/Child Bonding: Any extra-curricular activities on the school premises would further need longer transit for the students/parents. This will restrict parents' involvement in their children's education/development. It will also reduce family time.
4. Property Values: Currently, the housing prices in all the areas are significantly dictated by the quality/name of the school in the vicinity. Most of the housing decisions were made so that people could be closer to the schools their children were attending. Changing school assignment would have significantly negative impact to the housing prices in the so-called good neighborhoods. Lower property prices will in-turn reduce property taxes that help in funding CMS, further affecting the quality of the schools/education.
