In 2021, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities across the country continue to deny family members access to loved ones with dementia. As a result, people with dementia are isolated in hospitals away from anyone they know or who knows them and their unique needs. Injuries and death have occurred as a result. In the thousands of facilities with severe staffing shortages, residents’ most basic needs for hygiene, nutrition, physical activity and engagement go unmet for weeks and months on end. Elders that the lockdown was intended to protect are now dying from the “cure”.  In March 2020, it was prudent to block community members from visiting facilities. Ten months later, we know more about the virus and its transmission. Federal guidelines have changed accordingly. Yet hospitals and care facilities have failed to adopt policies to fit new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Those guidelines clearly allow "limiting visitors to only those that provide assistance to the patient" (CMS) and to "limit visitors to the facility to only those essential for the patient’s physical or emotional well-being and care.” (CDC). To deny people with dementia care to meet their most basic human needs is a blatant violation of their rights to be free of discrimination based on their disability. We call on the American Hospital Association, the American Health Care Association, and the National Center for Assisted Living to immediately call on their members to implement new visitor restriction policies that align with federal guidelines. We call on the CMS and the Joint Commission for Accreditation to create penalties for failing to provide care according to current federal guidelines. Every day that goes by without these changes sentences thousands of America’s most vulnerable citizens to spend their final months and days in an abyss of confusion, deep loneliness, and suffering. Millions of family members who love them will spend the rest of their lives recalling the barbaric neglect their loved ones suffered at the hands of the health "care" system.
