As you all know, overcrowding is an issue at the high school. There are several factors involved, and the school and staff are doing the best they can to help the community.

With this petition, we are hoping to work with CMS and offer some simple, cost-effective solutions to improve safety for the students and surrounding neighborhoods. While these items don’t solve every problem, they will allow CMS more time to come up with a permanent solution to help children and families in this school district.

This petition is asking CMS for two things:

1. Check the residency of every student, every year. This means children going to the school should be living in THIS school district. There are hundreds of students that don’t. They are living in other districts in Charlotte, Union County or South Carolina.

2. That CMS build an overflow parking lot for high school students and staff directly across the street from the high school. CMS owns the 37 acres there. They are constructing a new elementary school on that property. The new high school overflow parking lot could occupy one corner of the property without impacting the elementary school. Even when the high school is at capacity, there aren’t enough parking spots on the current high school campus for staff and students. The school is significantly OVER capacity right now. An overflow parking lot would enhance the safety of students and eliminate hazardous parking conditions in all neighborhoods surrounding the school. It also would be much safer for students to park on CMS property and be crossing guard assisted across congested Ardrey Kell Road, rather than jaywalk or cross other busy roads surrounding the school.
