Help prevent cutting of over 500 trees around Futala lake in Nagpur for cement roads.

The road in front of Futala lake in Nagpur (West) off Amravati Road is proposed to be beautified. It was learnt that various agencies mentioned in the petition who are undertaking this beautification and development work is going to take ecologically damaging steps of cutting down vast number of trees and also clog the catchment areas of the Futala lake to beautify the area.

Through a news paper article has been published on 7th November, 2018 in Nagpur city edition of Times of India newspaper and more particularly in its Nagpur Supplement it has been learnt that a clearance has been given by the Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) for handing over of near about one Hectare of its land to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Maha-Metro for construction of alternate concrete road between Bharat Nagar square on Amravati Road to Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran Office (referred to MJP Office hereinafter) at Telangkhedi Hanuman Mandir Road. It is further reported that for the said road near about 500 or more big fully grown-up trees will be brutally cut.

As per the reports alternative road is proposed through a green cover area owned by PDKV which will necessitate cutting of over 500 trees some of which are over 100 years old. Moreover, road proposed to be build through this 'one of the last remaining' green areas of Nagpur city is of cement and is said to be necessary as it would ease traffic during the period of Futala redevelopment. The news link is attached here for reference.

Such decisions of development at an irreparable cost to the environment and ecology are destroying our natural resources which give us humans 'life' in the form of free oxygen and clean our air of the rising pollution. There are already existing roads just a few hundred metres away which can ease traffic which is anyways not high in this area.

Moreover we are clogging all possible sources of rejuvenating ground water levels by rapid concretisation and cement road making in the garb of development. This is going to be disastrous to the area and people of Nagpur who are already reeling under possible threats of water shortage in the future. We don't want to make a 'Delhi' out of Nagpur. We want our trees to remain that give us oxygen.

You've probably heard that trees produce oxygen, but have you ever wondered just how much oxygen one tree makes? The amount of oxygen produced by a tree depends on several factors.

1) A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. Not only that a tree also purifies the air as mentioned below.

2) A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs/year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings.

3) Therefore each leafy tree sustains life for atleast 12 people.

Now imagine just for an alternative temporary road of less than a kilometre in length the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is ready to cut down over 500 trees. That is equivalent to murder of 500x12= 6000 humans by cutting off their oxygen source!

If this is not alarming to you then what is?
Do raise your voice against such un-thoughtful step which will damage the ecology irreparably. Let's do our bit to save the last of the lungs of Nagpur.

Kindly sign this petition so that it reaches maximum people and urges the authorities not to take such disastrous decisions.
