Hi Mel, I am committed to creating an off leash area in Ashfield as it’s in the top 4 Inner west suburbs for dog ownership and currently has no off leash area.
There are two sites currently under investigation - the new park on holden st (consultation now) and Ashfield park as part of its draft Pom. That said I’m thinking it might be good to consider the suitability of many sites all at the once instead of park by park, Pom by Pom.
Some sites will be more suitable than others so think it could be good to commission a report analysing the suitability of all potential sites in the suburb (like yeo and other parks) including what infrastructure may be needed (fencing etc) and impact on current users and environment- important we get the site right and it meets community need.
In a second reply:
Mél Dee can you link me the petition?
As I’ve explained im very supportive of a new off leash area for our suburb but I would need more info and community consultation before committing to the site - and the community need for an off leash area may be less if the current sites being looked at eventuate in off leash areas. We need a healthy combo of both on and off leash spaces.
Also I really echo Stuart Hickson’S call for council to better enforce and inform residents of their on leash obligations.
