Petition Title
Support a Clothing-Optional Recreational Areas Framework for Australia
Proposed by Vincent Marty, Founder, NaturismRE
Email: office@naturismre.com
Website: naturismre.com

The petition
We call on Australian federal, state and territory governments, local councils and relevant land-management authorities to consider a clearer legal and administrative framework for appropriately managed clothing-optional recreational areas.

Naturism and clothing-optional recreation can take place in peaceful, non-sexual settings including beaches, parks, recreational areas, walking trails and other suitable environments.

Yet responsibility for these spaces, and the laws and policies affecting them, can differ significantly between jurisdictions and authorities.

A clearer framework could provide greater certainty for participants, other members of the public, councils, land managers and enforcement authorities.

What we are asking governments to consider
We ask relevant Australian authorities to examine mechanisms that could:

enable suitable beaches, parks, trails and other recreational areas to be considered for clothing-optional use;
provide clear signage, boundaries and visitor information where designated areas are established;
allow appropriate temporary or event-based clothing-optional activities where permitted;
establish clear behavioural expectations addressing sexual conduct, harassment, intrusive photography and other inappropriate behaviour;
provide legal and administrative clarity for people lawfully using authorised clothing-optional areas;
incorporate community consultation where significant changes to public-space use are proposed;
consider environmental protection, land management, accessibility and existing recreational use;
allow new arrangements to be reviewed in response to evidence, practical experience and community feedback.
Clothing-optional means choice
This proposal does not seek to make every beach, park or recreational area clothing-optional.

Nor does it seek to require anyone to participate in nudity.

Depending on the model and location, clothing-optional areas may allow clothed and unclothed visitors to share the same environment.

The objective is choice, clarity and respectful coexistence.

Why this matters
Public policy concerning nudity can become complicated when non-sexual nudity, sexual conduct, indecency and personal attitudes toward the human body are treated as though they are the same issue.

They are not necessarily the same.

Clearer frameworks can help authorities distinguish between legitimate clothing-optional recreation and behaviour that remains prohibited regardless of whether clothing is worn.

They can also provide communities with a transparent process for considering where clothing-optional recreation may or may not be appropriate.

Health and wellbeing
Questions concerning body acceptance, stigma, outdoor recreation, social participation, nature connection and wellbeing may also be relevant to this discussion.

This petition does not claim that naturism is a medical treatment or that clothing-optional participation guarantees particular health outcomes.

These questions should be considered according to available evidence and, where appropriate, further research.

We call on
Federal and state or territory governments to consider whether legislative, regulatory or policy clarification is appropriate within their respective responsibilities.

Local councils, park authorities and land managers to consider whether suitable clothing-optional opportunities can be established, recognised, trialled or appropriately managed within their authority.

Relevant government agencies to provide clear information about the legal, environmental, planning and public-safety requirements applying to clothing-optional recreational areas.

The Australian community to participate constructively in consultation and discussion about how different recreational preferences can coexist in shared environments.

About the proposal
The Clothing-Optional Recreational Areas proposal is a NaturismRE public-policy and advocacy initiative.

It is not legislation currently before an Australian parliament unless and until a Bill is formally introduced through the relevant parliamentary process.

Supporting this petition means supporting consideration of an appropriate framework. It does not mean supporting clothing-optional use at every public recreational location.

Sign to support consideration of a clearer framework for clothing-optional recreation in Australia.
Clarity. Choice. Coexistence.
