"Clothing and Rights: Combating Harassment and Discrimination for women"

"Clothing and Rights: Combating Harassment and Discrimination for women"
The Issue
"Is the reason for the harassment of women due to their choice of inappropriate clothing?"
One important question we should consider is whether harassment against women is caused by their clothing choices. This issue of harassment deserves serious attention. Why do some women face harassment? Is it necessary for women to dress “appropriately” to avoid such experiences? Everyone has the right to live freely and choose what they want to wear.
Since time immemorial, many people have tended to judge others based on their attire. Often, the blame is directed toward women who wear short or attractive clothing, but is this really the main reason for harassment?
Numerous reports of such cases continue to emerge in the news. Should we allow this to happen? What about the safety of women? Should they be the ones to avoid harassment? Who is truly at fault in this situation? Is it the women who choose their clothing to express confidence and self-trust, or is it the mindset of those who believe that certain outfits show a lack of self-respect?
According to the Philippine National Police, approximately 6,000 cases of violence against women were recorded as of August 2022, and this number continues to rise. It’s true that each of us has different perspectives and levels of understanding regarding others. It might be acceptable to comment on someone’s clothing, especially if they are a minor, such as in schools with dress codes or in religious communities that prohibit inappropriate attire. However, using the term “harassment” is never acceptable, especially for women who have long been victims of such treatment, and it becomes even more concerning when it leads to severe violations.
The root cause of harassment often lies in the misguided thoughts and inappropriate attractions towards women or even men (including those who identify as transgender). This issue stems not from what people wear but from the mentality that drives undesirable behavior. From a young age, children can be exposed to such scenarios through their surroundings, whether playing outside or at home.
