This petition is to advocate for the shutting down of The Day’s comment section. For many years, it has been a toxic space that has real effects on our community. Because subscribers are required to use their real names, readers and citizens know exactly who is hateful and bigoted. These commenters are using their free time to demean local citizens who are covered in the paper, insult one another, and spread dangerous disinformation. While some feel they are rising to the occasion to fight the hate, they are just contributing to the chaos and bad information [citing AI overviews is not good practice].
Despite many direct appeals to The Day’s leadership and writers, along with letters to the editor, the request has fallen on deaf ears.
