The Issue

Halloween is a cherished tradition in Takoma Park, especially on Maple Avenue, which is filled with hundreds of families and trick-or-treaters. Last year alone, more than 400 children participated, crossing this busy street in the dark.

Each year, our community's requests to temporarily block vehicular traffic and ensure pedestrian safety - as is done on various streets for the Fourth of July, Takoma Street Fest and other events - have been denied.

This year, Halloween falls on a Saturday, raising expectations for larger turnouts in the neighborhood. While we greatly appreciate the crossing guards that the city added last year, we know that more is required to ensure everyone's safety.

We're asking the Takoma Park Police Department to temporarily block vehicle traffic on Maple Avenue between Tulip and Philadelphia streets from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, October 31. Please add your voice to our community's request by signing this petition.
