Close Norte Vista High School Tomorrow For Safety Due to Nearby Fire

The Issue

I was at practice at Norte Vista High School when I noticed the acrid smell of fumes filling the air. My headache set in shortly after, a painful reminder of the dangerous situation we are in due to the fire that is approaching our community.

We need to close Norte Vista High School tomorrow, and here's why. Not only could the fire possibly reach us, but also the harmful pollutants from the smoke are an immediate health hazard. Continued exposure can lead to decreased lung function, bronchitis, worsening asthma, and even cardiovascular problems.

In 2017, NIOSH reported that firefighters had a 14% higher risk of dying from respiratory diseases, primarily due to smoke inhalation. Though we are not firefighters, our proximity to the fire puts us at a similar risk. Imagine the health implications for us, especially those of us already facing respiratory challenges such as asthma and allergies. Is it a risk we are willing to take, especially when a reprieve lies merely in closing the school for a day?

Yet, this is not just about today or tomorrow. This is about setting a precedent. It's about prioritizing the safety and well-being of the students, the youth of our future.

Let's be reasonable. Let's be proactive. We urge the school administration and district authority to put the health and safety of the students first. The only adequate response is to close Norte Vista High School tomorrow.
