I have personal and painfully distressing experience witnessing the inhumane treatment of animals at the Lagoon Amusement Park's Zoo in Utah. The animals are profoundly neglected and live under appalling conditions, which has spurred me to action. According to a report by World Animal Protection, a shocking 75% of zoos worldwide fail to meet the basic welfare needs of the animals they house (World Animal Protection, 2019). Although the Lagoon Amusement Park is primarily an entertainment venue, the animals in its zoo are included in this statistic. They are deprived of the necessary care and natural habitat they deserve, leading to severe distress and suffering. Additionally, the park does not provide an adequate educational experience that appropriately stresses the importance of animal welfare and conservation of their natural habitats. We believe that closing the zoo and re-homing the animals to accredited sanctuaries would not only improve the lives of the animals but also uphold the humane respect for all living beings that our society advocates.
