The Issue

Due to first-hand experiences of witnessing misuse of funding and manipulation of friendships, I find it necessary to come forward and appeal for the shutdown of GoFundMe. These experiences have demonstrated that individuals are increasingly relying on the platform to cover costs for funerals, hospital bills, and legal disputes, circumventing personal responsibilities.

These individuals often shun the traditional method of managing expenses such as income generation, savings or taking out loans, and instead turn to soliciting donations from others. People on disability can save a little each month to what they need or go to the hospital with a payment plan, take out a small loan or open a credit card. People have the new iPhone, but not health or life insurance. For food for you and your children, use a food pantry or a church/place of worship.

The culture fostered by GoFundMe encourages a dependence on unguaranteed kindness rather than self-sufficiency. In the past, people would have launched fundraising events like a charity car wash, providing a service in exchange for financial aid, but this ethos is being lost due to the simplicity offered by GoFundMe.

I believe it's critically important that we understand how this platform impacts society at a larger scale. Various media reports have surfaced highlighting instances when this platform has backfired, causing more harm than good.

Not to mention on the other side, you're depending on the generosity of others and GoFundMe can shut down your campaign and you're back to square one or they tax the heck out of you, and you need to raise the goal to what you don't need and hurt your annual taxes.

In closing, this is not a critique of generosity, but rather a plea for fostering personal responsibility, initiative, and respect for traditional methods of lending and fundraising. We must curb this growing dependence on others for our needs. Please consider signing this petition to shut down GoFundMe and encourage individuals to take control of their financial wellbeing.
