Close down SeaWorld San Antonio and free the orcas
The Issue
SeaWorld San Antonio, a popular marine-themed amusement park, has been at the center of controversy for years due to its treatment of orcas and other marine animals. Despite efforts to highlight the suffering of these creatures, SeaWorld has continued operations, prioritizing profits over the welfare of the animals. This petition calls on the management of SeaWorld and relevant authorities to take immediate action to close down the facility and ensure the responsible relocation of its orcas to marine sanctuaries.
Scientific research has demonstrated that orcas, who naturally roam the ocean for hundreds of miles, suffer tremendously when kept in captivity. At SeaWorld San Antonio, these majestic creatures are confined to small tanks, deprived of mental stimulation, and subjected to unnatural living conditions. Reports and investigations have shown signs of stress, depression, and aggression among orcas due to these inadequate living conditions.
According to Whale and Dolphin Conservation, orcas in captivity have a much shorter lifespan compared to their wild counterparts. In the wild, an orca can live up to 50-60 years on average, with some females living up to 90 years. However, in captivity, their life expectancy drastically reduces, with many dying within their first few years. This stark difference highlights the urgent need for change.
There is a global movement gaining momentum, advocating for the release of captive orcas to sea sanctuaries where they can live in more natural settings and receive necessary rehabilitation. By closing SeaWorld San Antonio, we can join this progressive movement and demonstrate our commitment to ethical treatment of animals.
The closure of other facilities, such as Vancouver Aquarium and the announcement by SeaWorld to end captive breeding programs and theatrical shows, demonstrates that change is possible and beneficial. We need to continue pressing these organizations to follow through with their commitments and extend them to all locations.
Let us not turn away from the plight of the orcas any longer. Sign this petition to urge SeaWorld and the relevant authorities to close the doors of SeaWorld San Antonio and create a better future for these incredible creatures. Together, we can push forward a more humane and compassionate approach to wildlife conservation.
